From the author's foreword: Three generations of my family saw service on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. I was the last to retire after more than 45 years with the Santa Fe. My work necessitated a lot of traveling and working many places for the railroad. Originally assigned to the system at Topeka, Kan., I transferred to the Western Lines in 1945. I lived in Amarillo, Texas, headquarters for the Western Lines, for 28 years. Here, then, is a sample of what it was like to be a Santa Fe engine picture taker during these years. I hope it will bring memories to the older railfan and offers some insight into the steam era to the younger railfan. |
