In 1946, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad could look back with pride on its accomplishments during World War II. Annual net ton-miles more than tripled from pre-war levels and passenger traffic nearly quadrupled -- all without adding one new locomotive to its fleet. Starting in 1946, the Katy moved to replace some of its elderly steam locomotives, starting modestly with Baldwin switchers. By January 1953, railroad management announced that the Katy was completely dieselized, though the last steam locomotive was not retired until June 1954.
