Famous Lost Locomotives of North America

The end of the industrial steam age in North America resulted in many steam locomotives being relegated to parks or museums. However, during the regular use of steam, there were many instances in which steam engines became “lost locomotives,” often by either sinking into deep bodies of water by accident or by being intentionally abandoned in place. Many of these stories of lost locomotives now range from fact to urban myth. This book examines some of the best known cases of forlorn or abandoned steam engines that have been recorded over the past century. It includes an extensive appendix section detailing known or rumored lost locomotives.
