Crandall Cabs and Secondhand E Units is the complete story of the C&NW’s unusual approach to its commuter service in Chicago during the 1970-80 era. Faced with unprecedented ridership growth on its suburban runs, the railroad sought creative, economical solutions to its motive power problems. C&NW then acquired and remodeled 15 secondhand E-units from the Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern for commuter service. Six of the units were rebuilt to a unique hybrid body style known as “Crandalls,” a locomotive still celebrated for its unusual appearance.
